Advanced microgrid solution at Eluvaitivu island, Sri Lanka (CASE)

As advanced microgrid solution, INNOVENTUM supplied six 3.5 kW wind turbines with Krinner screw foundations and ABB wind inverters as part of the microgrid system on the island of Eluvaitivu in the north of Sri Lanka.

The installations of this advanced microgrid solution became possible thanks to the financing by the Asian Development Bank in collaboration with the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Apart from INNOVENTUM, the project involved several other suppliers such as SMA, Leclanché, Haeron Solar and HiPower. Local installation partner BAM Green was responsible for the installations. SI Clean Energy from Australia was invited to configure the system.

It should be noted that INNOVENTUM was the first supplier to deliver all equipment for advanced microgrid solution on time and received consistently positive feedback from both ADB and CEB.

The Island Microgrid

This complete advanced microgrid solution consists of a 46 kWp PV array, six 3.5 kW wind turbines, twelve SMA Sunny Island 8 kW inverters and a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery bank. The purpose of the solar power off grid system and hybrid solutions is to reduce the consumption of diesel at the existing power plant.

Timeline & Performance Figures

INNOVENTUM has installed the first turbine in November 2015 and has trained the local installer to continue with the rest of the turbines and other components for advanced microgrid solution.

In April 2016, the installation was complete and the system was inaugurated.

The wind turbines have been producing extremely well, as they are placed at very favourable open wind conditions and have contributed sizeable amounts of energy to the island. You can see selected production figures in the table below.

Training Seminar by INNOVENTUM

To analyse the results of this advanced microgrid solution project, INNOVENTUM organised a seminar in Sweden for the representatives of Ceylon Electricity Board and partner companies at the beginning of 2017.

The seminar was aimed at consolidating microgrid and advanced microgrid solutions. Also the knowledge and experience achieved through the first project stage. The learnings will be used for the formulation of the second phase of the project with microgrid installations on three further islands in Sri Lanka.
