Advanced microgrid solution on the island of Eluvaitivu, Sri Lanka(CASE)

As part of an advanced microgrid solution, INNOVENTUM supplied six 3.5-kW wind turbines, equipped withground screw foundation ABB wind inverters, as part of the microgrid system on the island of Eluvaitivu in northern Sri Lanka.

The installation of this advanced microgrid solution was made possible thanks to funding from the Asian Development Bank in collaboration with the Ceylon Electricity Board.

In addition to INNOVENTUM, several other suppliers were involved in the project, including SMA, Leclanché, Haeron Solar, and HiPower. The local installation partner, BAM Green, was responsible for the installations. SI Clean Energy from Australia was brought in to configure the system.

It should be noted that INNOVENTUM was the first supplier to deliver all the equipment for the advanced microgrid solution on time and received consistently positive feedback from both ADB and CEB.

The Island's Microgrid

This comprehensive, advanced microgrid solution consists of a 46 kWp solar power system, six wind turbines with a capacity of 3.5 kW, twelve SMA Sunny Island 8 kW inverters, and a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery bank. The purpose of the solar-powered off-grid system and hybrid solutions is to reduce diesel consumption at the existing power plant.

Installation of the Advanced Microgrid Solution

INNOVENTUM installed the first turbine in November 2015 and trained the local installer to continue installing the remaining turbines and other components for the advanced microgrid solution.

In April 2016, the installation was completed and the system was inaugurated.

The wind turbines have performed very well, as they are located in an area with very favorable open wind conditions and have contributed significant amounts of energy to the island. You can see selected production statistics in the table below.

Training Seminar by INNOVENTUM

To analyze the results of this project on advanced microgrid solutions, INNOVENTUM organized a seminar in Sweden for representatives from the Ceylon Electricity Board and partner companies in early 2017.The seminar aimed to summarize microgrids and advanced microgrid solutions, as well as the knowledge and experience gained during the first phase of the project. The lessons learned will be used in planning the second phase of the project, which involves installing microgrids on three additional islands in Sri Lanka.
